In 2019, the IUCN SSC Iguana Specialist Group hosted a workshop focusing on conservation for two local species of Honduran iguanas. Resulting from this workshop, the Roatán Spiny-tailed Iguana Conservation Action Plan has now been published in English and Spanish. The overall goal is to prioritize conservation and management actions that are necessary to ensure the long-term survival of these iguanas. Actions include creating an impactful education program for locals and tourists, expanding the monitoring efforts, increase our understanding of their reproductive biology, reducing the threats associated with invasive species, and ensuring the long-term protection of these endemic iguanas.
The Endangered Roatán spiny-tailed iguana, Ctenosaura oedirhina, is found only on the islands of Roatán, Barbareta, and some surrounding cays. Although dense populations can be found in some privately protected locations, threats persist and management efforts are needed. This document presents a comprehensive five-year plan for the conservation and management actions considered essential to ensuring the long-term survival of Ctenosaura oedirhina in the wild. This plan combines knowledge and expertise from government, nongovernmental organizations, and the community of Roatán and greater Honduras, with the collective expertise of the IUCN SSC Iguana Specialist Group....
